A few minutes before sunrise on a bitterly cold Peak District morning just outside the village of Little Hayfield, the sky lit up with the most incredible display of bright pinks and purples, as if to try and distract us from the fact that the temperature was a ‘bracing’ minus 7 degrees C and the snow had brought our little part of the world to a standstill. For a moment, if we looked up, everything was rosy. The colours lasted for no more than a minute and then were gone – as was the feeling in my fingers.
